Candidate Filings Set the Stage for August Primary

The filing period for state and federal candidates seeking election closed on June 2. While we now know the universe of candidates, many races will require a primary election in August to determine who will appear on the November ballot.

The most notable primary battles in the state are in the races for U.S. Senate and Governor. On the Republican side, ten candidates filed to run for U.S. Senate,  with the most prominent being former sports reporter Michele Tafoya, 2024 candidate Royce White, and the GOP endorsed candidate Adam Schwarze. On the DFL side, there are six candidates in the U.S. Senate field, but this will be a head to head battle between Congresswoman Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan (the DFL endorsed candidate).

While there are seven DFL candidates in the field for Minnesota Governor, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar likely has that primary victory in the bag. Things will be much more competitive on the Republican side, where endorsed candidate Kendall Qualls will face off against My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell and Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth in a field of seven.

There are a few state House and Senate races that will go to a primary, but most legislative match ups are set for November. All eyes will be at the top of the ticket, waiting to see what down-ballot effect the primary winners will have during the last few months of the campaign cycle.
